Number of Children who Entered Out of Home Care, by Age at Removal in the United States, 2024

Children from birth to age 5 make up nearly half (46.2%, N=80,571) of the children placed in out-of-home care during Fiscal Year 2024. Children age 6 — 12 make up 28.5% (N=49,624) and children age 13 — 18+ make up 25.3% (N=44,085) of the children removed from their homes and placed in out-of-home care during the same time period.

If you suspect a child has been harmed by abuse or neglect, please call 1-800-422-4453.

Serving the United States and Canada, the hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with professional crisis counselors who—through interpreters—provide assistance in over 170 languages.
