Percent of Children with Parental Alcohol or Drug Abuse as a Condition Associated with Removal who were Under Age 1 in the United States, 2000 to 2024

The percentage of infants who entered out-of-home care who had parental alcohol or drug abuse as an identified condition of removal (there can be more than 1 reason listed for removal) gradually increased from 27.8% in 2000 to 55.2% in 2024.

If you suspect a child has been harmed by abuse or neglect, please call 1-800-422-4453.

Serving the United States and Canada, the hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with professional crisis counselors who—through interpreters—provide assistance in over 170 languages.
